Spring is supposed to be chaotic.
That’s how nature works.
Some plants bloom early.
Others wait.
Birds migrate in waves.
Animals wake from hibernation days or weeks apart.
Even the forest itself grows unevenly — some trees racing ahead while others lag behind.
Growth is messy.
Unpredictable.
Alive.
Which is why Caelwyn notices the problem almost immediately.
The park is too… synchronized.
Three days ago the trees were still hesitant — bare branches with the first cautious buds.
Now the leaves are everywhere.
Not gradually.
All at once.
Caelwyn stands beside the park fence watching a patch of grass that looked dead last week.
Now it’s thick and bright green.
“Temperature spike?” he asks.
Stacy kneels near the soil with a small field notebook.
“No.”
“Sunlight?”
“Normal variance.”
She taps the notebook.
“Photosynthesis is behaving like the season jumped forward.”
Caelwyn studies the trees.
“So spring came early.”
Stacy shakes her head slowly.
“No.”
She closes the notebook.
“Spring synchronized.”
That word hangs in the air for a moment.
Synchronized.
Plants normally respond to different signals.
Temperature.
Light duration.
Soil chemistry.
Rainfall.
Different species react at different times.
That’s why spring unfolds slowly.
First the grass.
Then the buds.
Then the leaves.
But this year something is different.
Everything is responding at once.
The grass.
The trees.
The insects.
Even the animals moving through the park seem restless in the same rhythm.
“What could cause that?” Caelwyn asks.
Stacy gestures toward the ground.
“Plants don’t grow alone.”
He nods.
“Competition for resources.”
“Communication.”
Caelwyn raises an eyebrow.
“Plants talk.”
“Through fungi.”
Beneath the park lies a hidden network of mycelium.
Threads of fungus connecting roots across the entire ecosystem.
Trees share nutrients.
Plants warn each other about insects.
Signals travel through the soil faster than most people realize.
Scientists call it the Wood Wide Web.
A biological network beneath the forest.
Spring normally activates that network.
Growth signals travel through roots and fungi.
But those signals usually ripple outward slowly.
This year the signal feels different.
Stronger.
Cleaner.
More organized.
They stop beside a patch of soil where several plants have pushed through the ground at almost identical heights.
Perfectly aligned.
“Growth isn’t supposed to look like that,” Stacy says quietly.
Caelwyn crouches beside the plants.
They look healthy.
Normal.
But their pattern is too precise.
“What if the signal changed?” he asks.
Stacy doesn’t answer immediately.
Then she closes the notebook.
“What if something amplified it?”
Caelwyn stands slowly.
“That sounds like a Delta Green problem.”
“It might be.”
They look out across the park.
Everything appears perfectly normal.
Children running.
Dogs barking.
Wind moving through fresh leaves.
But now that Caelwyn sees the pattern, he can’t unsee it.
Growth.
Everywhere.
At the same time.
If spring is a signal…
Then something is broadcasting it.
And if the signal grows stronger each year…
The real question isn’t why the plants are responding.
The real question is:
What else is listening.
Because growth isn’t just a biological process.
In mythology there is a name for growth without limits.
Shub-Niggurath.
The Black Goat of the Woods.
The principle of endless fertility.
Infinite life.
Infinite offspring.
Infinite expansion.
A concept older than agriculture.
Older than forests.
Older than humanity.
Caelwyn watches the wind move through the trees.
Leaves rustle like a network passing information.
“Growth is supposed to be chaotic,” Stacy says.
“But this year…”
She looks toward the soil.
“…it’s organized.”
And somewhere beneath the park
beneath the roots
beneath the fungal network
something is beginning to recognize the signal.
