Chibi sat on the edge of the loading platform, kicking their heels against the metal.
Far below, the fields stretched out like dark lines across the valley. Machines crawled slowly through the soil, opening and closing the earth in long steady patterns.
Mara sat beside them, watching the wind move across the rows.
Chibi:
My teacher said it’s spring.
Mara:
It is.
Chibi:
Spring means things are born.
Mara nodded.
Mara:
Seeds.
Chibi:
Animals.
Mara:
Sometimes.
Chibi:
People.
Mara smiled faintly.
Mara:
Yes.
Chibi leaned forward, staring at the workers moving through the fields.
Chibi:
There are a lot of seeds.
Mara:
Millions.
Chibi:
Not all of them grow though.
Mara shook her head.
Mara:
No.
Chibi:
Some die.
Mara watched the crawlers sealing another row of soil.
Mara:
That’s part of it.
Chibi frowned.
Chibi:
That’s strange.
Mara:
What is?
Chibi pointed toward the valley.
Chibi:
Spring is supposed to be about life.
Mara:
It is.
Chibi:
But lots of things die before they grow.
Mara rested her hands behind her.
Mara:
That’s how life works.
Chibi thought about that.
Then they grinned slightly.
Chibi:
But the seeds keep trying.
Mara looked back at the fields.
Row after row closing over the planted soil.
Mara:
Yes.
Chibi:
Every year.
Mara:
Even after winter.
Chibi leaned back again, staring up at the pale artificial sun drifting across the dome.
Chibi:
I like spring.
Mara watched the valley one more time.
Mara:
Me too.
And somewhere beneath the soil, hidden in the dark,
millions of small beginnings were waiting.
