THE FIRST THING TO NOTICE (Tales from the Loop Country Road Kids inspired by Stranger Things) (Month 3 · Week 1 — Mara & Chibi)

Spring never arrives the way adults expect.
No announcement.
No sudden change in the sky.
Most mornings look almost exactly like winter.
The attic window still shows the same yard.
Brown grass.
Patches of old snow along the fence.
But something has changed.
Mara notices the light first.
It reaches the floor earlier than yesterday, stretching across the wooden boards like a pale ribbon.
Across the room Chibi is already sitting by the window.
“You see it?” he asks.
“See what?”
He points to the corner of the glass.
A small spider crawls slowly along the frame.
Mara squints.
“That’s been there before.”
“No,” Chibi says quietly.
“This one’s new.”
They sit beside the window and listen.
For a moment the world is silent.
Then a sound breaks through the air.
A bird.
Just one.
Another answers from somewhere farther away.
Mara leans closer to the glass.
“That wasn’t there yesterday.”
“No,” Chibi says again.
Outside the yard still looks like winter.
But near the fence something pushes through the wet soil.
A single blade of green.
Tiny.
Easy to miss.
Chibi watches it carefully.
“You know what I think?” he says.
“What?”
“Spring doesn’t start when people say it does.”
Mara tilts her head.
“When does it start then?”
“When the small things come back.”
The spider.
The bird.
The green blade in the dirt.
Adults will notice spring later — when flowers appear and the air grows warm.
But that isn’t when it begins.
It begins here.
In the quiet moment when something small returns to the world.
And someone notices.
