The attic is quiet again.

No carnival music.
No voices below the floorboards.
Just cold blue moonlight through the small window.

The red devil mask lies on the desk.

Face up.

Chibi is awake.

He sits on the edge of the mattress and looks at it.

It hasn’t moved.

It hasn’t changed.

And yet the room feels slightly fuller.

Not darker.

Just… waiting.

“You’re thinking about it,” Mara says softly from the floor near the lamp.

“Yes.”

He stands and walks toward the desk.

The mask catches a thin line of silver light across its scratched red paint.

He remembers how it felt.

Clearer.
Stronger.
Less small.

He picks it up.

The plastic is cold.

Light.

Empty.

When he lifts it closer to his face, something inside his chest expands.

Not fear.

Not danger.

Possibility.

“You don’t need it,” Mara says calmly.

“I know.”

But he doesn’t lower it yet.

He closes his eyes for a moment.

He remembers the confidence.

The sharpness.

The way hesitation disappeared.

It didn’t make him evil.

It made him more.

“Why does it feel stronger now?” he asks quietly.

“Because you remember it stronger,” Mara answers.

He opens his eyes.

Looks into the hollow interior.

Nothing there.

No glow.
No shadow.

Just plastic.

“It didn’t do anything,” he says.

“No.”

“But I did.”

“Yes.”

That lands.

The attic stays still.

The mask waits.

He could put it on.

Nothing would explode.

He would just feel bigger again.

And maybe he wouldn’t take it off so quickly this time.

That is the part that scares him.

Not the mask.

The liking.

Slowly, he turns it upside down.

The red grin presses against the wooden desk.

Hidden.

The room feels smaller again.

But clearer.

“I don’t want it to decide,” he says.

“It can’t,” Mara replies.
“Unless you let it.”

Morning light begins to replace the blue.

The mask lies face down.

Harmless.

Waiting.

Hope exists.

Because he chose.

Temptation exists.

Because it felt good.
