Masks of the Imperium 4.2 — When the Empire Claims the Ritual

Eljara:
It looks the same.

Sean:
That’s why it works.

Eljara watches the procession form beneath the lumen strips. Masks in hand. No shouting. No music. No inversion. Just lines. Orderly.

Eljara:
Last month they were running.

Sean:
Last month there was no ownership.

Eljara:
Ownership.

Sean:
Of meaning.

A Confessor moves down the line. Oil touches each mask before it is worn.

Eljara:
They didn’t ban it.

Sean:
No empire bans what it can absorb.

Eljara:
It feels colder.

Sean:
It is colder.

Eljara:
Explain it without doctrine.

Sean exhales slowly.

Sean:
People need collective intensity. You can’t remove that. If you try, it fractures. It mutates. It goes underground.

Eljara:
So they redirected it.

Sean:
Yes.

Eljara:
From each other—

Sean:
—to Him.

The chant begins. Slow. Measured. Heavy. Not wild. Not ecstatic.

Eljara:
They even kept midnight.

Sean:
Of course.

Eljara:
But it isn’t midnight here.

Sean:
It is on Terra.

Eljara looks at the chrono-display. Terra Standard Time.

Eljara:
So biology yields to doctrine.

Sean:
Eventually, yes.

Eljara:
That’s… unnatural.

Sean:
It’s disciplined.

The first masks go on. All at once. No cheering. No laughter. Just synchronization.

Eljara:
Before, the mask dissolved rank.

Sean:
Before, hierarchy blurred.

Eljara:
Now?

Sean:
Now it reinforces it.

Eljara:
How?

Sean:
Confession before concealment. Absolution before removal. The mask represents sin now, not freedom.

Eljara:
They rewrote it.

Sean:
They claimed it had always meant this.

Eljara:
That’s revision.

Sean:
That’s empire.

The procession moves along the exact same route as last month. Same steps. Same plaza. Same walls.

Eljara:
Nothing changed.

Sean:
Everything changed.

Eljara:
Do they feel it?

Sean:
Some feel relief.

Eljara:
Relief?

Sean:
Last month there was uncertainty. Rumor. Something answered. This reframes it as imbalance. A lesson. Lessons are easier than heresy.

Eljara:
So instead of corruption—

Sean:
—misinterpretation.

Eljara:
And misinterpretation can be corrected.

Sean:
Exactly.

The chant rises, but never breaks structure. It never spills. It never overflows.

Eljara:
It’s contained.

Sean:
That’s the point.

Eljara:
What’s the cost?

Sean:
Spontaneity. Risk. Warmth.

Eljara:
And the gain?

Sean:
Predictability. Stability. Control over narrative.

Eljara watches the masks turn toward the central icon in perfect synchronization.

Eljara:
It survives.

Sean:
Yes.

Eljara:
But it doesn’t belong to them anymore.

Sean:
It never did.

Silence.

Eljara:
Is this victory?

Sean:
In this galaxy?
Yes.

Eljara:
And what did it kill?

Sean doesn’t answer immediately.

Sean:
The dangerous part.

Eljara:
And the human part?

Long pause.

Sean:
Sometimes those are the same.

The masks come off on Terra midnight. Perfectly timed. Perfectly obedient.

Eljara:
It feels smaller.

Sean:
It feels governed.

Eljara:
I don’t know if that’s better.

Sean:
It’s survivable.

Silence settles over the plaza.

Eljara:
They didn’t crush it.

Sean:
No.

Eljara:
They sanctified it.

Sean:
And sanctification lasts longer than fear.
