Mara knew the city was louder before she heard it.

The floor felt different.

Not shaking.
Not moving.
Just… listening.

Chibi was lying on his stomach near the hallway, watching the thin strip of light beneath the door stretch and shrink as people passed outside.

“They’re being dramatic again,” he said.

“They’re being bigger,” Mara corrected.

“That’s the same thing.”

“No,” she said. “Dramatic stops. Bigger doesn’t.”

From outside came a burst of laughter.

Too bright.
Too long.

Chibi grinned automatically — then stopped.

“That one didn’t end right,” he said.

Mara sat cross-legged with two paper masks in her lap. She had drawn over one of them, stretching the smile wider than it needed to be.

“You’re drawing it wrong,” he said.

“I know.”

“Why?”

She looked at the mask.

“Because that’s what they’re doing.”

Another cheer rolled past the house. Applause followed. Then more applause.

“They’re trying to win,” Chibi said.

“It’s not a game,” Mara replied.

“Everything’s a game.”

She shook her head.

“Games have turns.”

He thought about that.

Outside, someone shouted triumphantly — too loud, too confident. The sound lingered longer than it should have.

“They’re pretending too hard,” Chibi said quietly.

Mara nodded.

“When you pretend too hard,” she said, “you forget where you stop.”

He crawled closer.

“What happens if you don’t stop?”

She lifted the mask. The smile was too wide now. Too certain.

“It doesn’t come off right.”

He put it over his face and made a villain voice.

“I am terrible!” he declared.

He waited for her to laugh.

She didn’t.

He tried again, louder.

“I am TERRIBLE!”

The word bounced strangely in the hallway.

Not echoing.

Just… staying.

He lowered the mask slowly.

“That felt weird.”

“Yes.”

“It felt like someone else was finishing it.”

Mara didn’t look surprised.

Outside, the music swelled. A violin held a note too long. The house seemed to lean inward.

“They’re all being something,” Chibi said.

“Yes.”

“And they’re all being it together.”

“Yes.”

He frowned.

“That’s not fair.”

“Why?”

“Because when we play, it switches. I’m the dragon, then you are. Or I’m the villain and then I’m not.”

“It switches,” she agreed.

“But out there, it’s staying.”

Mara set the mask face down.

“It’s getting heavy,” she said.

“The noise?”

“The pretending.”

The light under the door flickered — not from a passing shadow, but as if something outside had brightened and dimmed at once.

“Did you see that?” he whispered.

“Yes.”

“They’re going to the big dance tonight.”

“Yes.”

“That’ll be worse.”

“Yes.”

He swallowed.

“Are we in trouble?”

She thought about it.

“Not yet.”

“When?”

“When it stops feeling like play.”

He looked toward the door.

“What if it already has?”

Another wave of laughter hit the house. The boards beneath them hummed faintly, like wood remembering something.

Chibi stood.

“I don’t like it when everyone agrees,” he said.

Mara blinked. “Why?”

“Because when everyone agrees, nobody checks.”

She stared at him.

“That’s right,” she said softly.

He pressed his ear to the door.

“They’re all being louder at the same time.”

“Yes.”

“Is that how things get in?”

She didn’t answer immediately.

Outside, applause crashed like a wave.

“No,” she said finally.

“Then how?”

“They make room.”

He stepped back.

“For what?”

She shook her head.

“Something that likes loud.”

Nothing scratched at the door.
Nothing knocked.
Nothing whispered.

But the hallway felt wider.

As if the space between the walls had stretched.

“When we play,” Chibi said carefully, “we stop before it gets too big.”

“Yes.”

“They’re not stopping.”

“No.”

He looked at the masks on the floor.

“Then maybe we shouldn’t play tonight.”

Mara turned the overdrawn smile face down.

“Yes,” she said.

Outside, the city grew louder.

And the house was no longer ignoring it.

It was listening.
