When order holds too well.
Stacy:
The clocks shouldn’t agree this closely.
Caelwyn:
Most people would call that progress.
Stacy:
Most people don’t understand instruments.
When systems stop arguing, it means something else is setting the pace.
Caelwyn:
Victoriana would have loved this.
Stacy:
Victoriana did love this. Synchronization was the dream.
Even time was expected to behave. Evenly. Predictably. Obediently.
Caelwyn:
And chaos?
Stacy:
It wasn’t removed.
It was concentrated.
She gestures to the clocks.
Stacy:
Once everyone moves at the same speed, deviations become visible.
Measurable. Punishable.
Caelwyn:
So time stopped describing reality.
Stacy:
And started enforcing it.
Outside, a factory whistle marks the hour. No one questions it.
Stacy:
When humans impose rigid time structures long enough, places begin to respond.
Caelwyn:
Respond how?
Stacy:
They fatigue.
Events repeat slightly wrong. Accidents cluster. Conversations loop.
Reality develops bad habits.
Caelwyn:
I’ve guarded places like that.
They felt tired. Like the world wanted to sit down.
Stacy:
That’s escalation.
Caelwyn:
And the Mythos?
Stacy:
Doesn’t need to intervene.
Human systems do the work for it.
She closes her notebook.
Stacy:
The more rigid time becomes, the more valuable ruptures are.
Caelwyn:
For things that don’t belong to sequence.
Stacy:
Yes.
One clock ticks louder than the rest.
Caelwyn:
So the danger isn’t ancient.
Stacy:
No. It’s modern.
Escalation doesn’t look like madness at first.
It looks like efficiency.
Caelwyn:
And Pulp?
Stacy:
Pulp interferes early.
Not to restore a past that never existed —
but to reintroduce error.
Caelwyn:
Error as mercy.
Stacy:
Imprecision as survival.
They listen to the clocks agree far too well.
Because in a Pulp Cthulhu world,
the most dangerous sound is not chaos —
it is perfect rhythm.
