TIME AT THE EDGE — Week 2 (Blade Runner TTRPG)
Mara & Chibi — Unfair Rules
Chibi is hopping across the floor, avoiding the cracks.
Chibi:
Cracks are traps.
Mara:
They’re just lines.
Chibi:
That’s what traps want you to think.
Mara keeps sorting crayons. Blue next to blue. Yellow next to yellow.
Mara:
You skipped red.
Chibi:
Red takes too long.
He hops over it.
Mara:
It’s the same floor.
Chibi:
Not if you wait.
Mara looks up.
Mara:
Wait for what?
Chibi:
For it to get boring.
Outside, a siren passes and doesn’t stop.
Chibi:
Adults are bad at games.
Mara:
Why?
Chibi:
They change the rules when they’re losing.
Mara thinks about that.
Mara:
Sometimes they don’t know they’re playing.
Chibi stops hopping.
Chibi:
That’s worse.
He sits down hard.
Chibi:
Yesterday took forever.
Mara:
It did.
Chibi:
Today is going too fast.
Mara:
It is.
Chibi presses a crayon hard against the floor.
Chibi:
Time cheats.
Mara gently takes the crayon.
Mara:
Time doesn’t cheat.
Chibi:
Then who does?
Mara hesitates.
Mara:
People do.
Chibi blinks, then grins.
Chibi:
I knew it.
He lies down and stares at the ceiling.
Chibi:
So when adults say “wait,” they mean “you don’t get to play.”
Mara:
Sometimes.
Chibi:
And when they say “hurry up”…
Mara:
They mean “you don’t get to think.”
Chibi nods.
Chibi:
Those are bad rules.
Mara:
Yes.
A quiet moment.
Chibi:
Can we make our own?
Mara smiles.
Mara:
We already do.
Midnight passes somewhere else.
Inside, the game changes.
