When the surge stops being harmless.
Eljara:
It’s louder tonight.
Sean:
Not in decibels. In density.
They stand at the edge of the street. The crowd is thicker than last week. Not larger — tighter.
Eljara:
They’re moving faster.
Sean:
Because the rules feel thinner.
That’s what synchronized time does. It tells people there’s a window — and that windows close.
Eljara:
Victoriana called this order.
Sean:
Victoriana loved order. Especially when it looked like progress.
A cheer ripples through the crowd. Too early. Too sharp.
Eljara:
They think it’s still a celebration.
Sean:
They always do.
By the time it isn’t, they’re already part of it.
Eljara:
Part of what?
Sean:
A surge.
Belief, expectation, fear — all compressed into the same moment.
He gestures subtly. Street corners. Doorways. A narrow alley that shouldn’t feel that close.
Sean:
When enough people lean forward at once, reality flexes.
Eljara:
And if it’s been under pressure long enough…
Sean:
It doesn’t flex.
It shears.
A bottle breaks somewhere. Laughter turns sharp.
Eljara:
Is this the Mythos?
Sean:
No.
That’s the dangerous part.
Eljara:
So what is it?
Sean:
Human efficiency.
Everyone moving on the same beat. Same countdown. Same expectation.
Fireworks explode overhead. Light without warmth.
Sean:
The Mythos doesn’t cause these moments.
It benefits from them.
Eljara:
Like scavengers.
Sean:
Like tides.
They don’t push — they take what’s already loose.
She scans faces now. Someone crying. Someone staring too long at nothing.
Eljara:
So escalation isn’t madness.
Sean:
No.
It’s pattern density.
Eljara:
And Pulp?
Sean:
Pulp moves before the break becomes obvious.
Eljara:
Doesn’t stop the surge.
Sean:
No.
Finds the first crack and widens it on purpose.
The countdown starts again. Someone restarted it. Louder this time.
Eljara:
They won’t even remember this tomorrow.
Sean:
No.
But something else will.
Zero hits. The crowd erupts.
Sean doesn’t celebrate.
He watches the space between people tear just enough to matter.
Because in a Pulp Cthulhu world,
the real danger isn’t when something arrives —
it’s when human timing does the invitation for it.
