TIME AT THE EDGE — Week 1 (Pulp Cthulhu by Gaslight)

Some beginnings are too loud.

Mara decided the hallway was wrong before anyone said anything.

It wasn’t darker.
It wasn’t colder.
It was just… heavier.
Like the air had sat down and didn’t intend to stand up again.

Chibi noticed it too. He always did. He didn’t say wrong. He never did.
He just put one foot on the painted line on the floor. Half on. Half off.

“That’s cheating,” Mara whispered.

Chibi grinned, the kind of grin that meant rules were about to be improved.
“It’s only cheating if the floor knows the rules.”

They stood very still. The house made its night sounds. Pipes ticking. Wood settling. Something that sounded like breathing but probably wasn’t.

Mara held the folded paper tight. She had folded it herself. Stars on the outside. Safe things on the inside. It mattered which way the paper faced. She knew that without knowing why.

“Is it almost?” she asked.

Chibi tilted his head. Not listening with his ears.
“Not yet. The numbers are still loud.”

Mara nodded. Adults liked numbers. Numbers meant time.
Time meant the grown-ups were nervous.

The New Year was coming.
She didn’t like that.

Things were supposed to go to sleep before new things arrived. You couldn’t just swap them. That wasn’t how it worked. Not with toys. Not with feelings. Probably not with years either.

Downstairs, laughter burst out too early.
Chibi flinched.

“They’re rushing it,” he said. “That makes cracks.”

Mara looked down the dark end of the hallway.
“Cracks where things fall through?”

“Or look through,” Chibi said, cheerful as always.

Mara slid down the wall and sat, pushing herself into the corner until the world only had two directions left. That was safer. Corners were good. Corners knew what they were.

She patted the floor beside her.

“Magic circle,” she said.

Chibi sat immediately. Rules were rules.

They touched knees. The air felt a little less heavy.

Mara began to hum. Not a song. A loop. It didn’t go anywhere, and that was the point. As long as it came back to the start, time behaved.

Chibi counted under his breath. Not in order.

“Three… blue… almost… pony… seven…”

The house creaked. Something shifted upstairs.

Mara didn’t look.

“If we don’t see it,” she said carefully, “it can’t see us back.”

Chibi nodded. “That’s a good rule.”

Outside, fireworks cracked the sky open. Too loud. Too bright.
Mara pressed her hands over her ears.

“They’re scaring it,” she whispered.

“No,” Chibi said. “They’re scaring themselves. We’re holding the line.”

Mara peeked at the folded paper. Just a little. The stars were still there.
Good.

“They think it’s a beginning,” she said.

Chibi leaned closer. His voice dropped, not because he was afraid, but because secrets liked being respected.

“It’s a do-over,” he corrected. “And do-overs only work if you mean them.”

The clock downstairs struck midnight. The sound felt wrong. Like a word said too loudly in a quiet room.

The house shuddered. Just a little.

Mara pressed her bare feet flat against the floor.

“Stay,” she told the world.

For a moment — just a moment — it did.

Because in a Pulp Cthulhu world, the universe doesn’t listen to prayers.
It doesn’t care about years. Or numbers. Or noise.

But sometimes, when the grown-ups are busy pretending time has started over,
and the cracks are watching,
and the air is heavy with meaning it doesn’t understand—

Sometimes a small circle,
and a quiet rule,
and two children who refuse to rush,

are enough to make things hold.

Just for tonight.
