Where I’m from,
this night was never about fireworks.
In Scotland, Hogmanay wasn’t a celebration of the future.
It was a reckoning with the past.
You didn’t cross the year carrying weight.
Not debts.
Not grudges.
Not words you owed someone and never spoke.
Old people said
whatever you drag across midnight
walks with you for the rest of the year.
That’s why houses were settled.
Why tools were cleaned.
Why doors were opened — briefly —
to let the old year leave on its own.
No wishes.
No promises.
Just honesty.
You stood still and asked yourself one thing:
What am I still carrying
that no longer belongs to me?
Because the year doesn’t care what you want.
But it remembers what you refuse to let go of.
So tonight,
don’t make plans.
Set things down.
🜍 The year turns.
