“That doesn’t sound scary.”
Chibi doesn’t answer right away.
He’s already skimming ahead.
Names crossed out.
Places blacked out.
Footnotes that feel heavier than the text above them.
“That’s how it always starts,” he says.
“With something ordinary that listens too closely.”
Mara turns the page.
A student.
A family murdered.
A sequence of numbers no one should recognize —
but somehow does.
“This isn’t one story,” she says quietly.
Chibi nods.
“Black Sites aren’t about monsters,” he replies.
“They’re about containment failing.”
He taps the margin.
“Every one of these places was sealed for a reason.”
“And every reason was ignored.”
Mara looks up.
“So… what do the Agents do?”
Chibi closes the file.
“They go where no one is supposed to go,” he says.
“They lock the door behind them.”
“And they make sure nothing follows.”
He pauses.
“Or they become the thing that does.”
