The rumble beneath your feet hesitates,
as if the city is holding its breath.
The gate on Redcross Way is closed.
It is always closed.
Iron bars thick with rust and memory.
And yet the ribbons move.
No wind.
No passing train.
They lift and twist against the metal,
silk and plastic and frayed cloth
pulling tight,
then slack,
like fingers testing knots.
You step closer.
The air smells wrong.
Vinegar, damp stone, something sweet underneath —
the ghost of gin poured into cracks that never healed.
Behind the gate, the ground dips unevenly.
Not soil.
Compression.
Fifteen thousand bodies pressing upward,
learning the shape of patience.
You hear voices then.
Not whispers.
Accounting.
Names spoken without urgency.
Elizabeth.
Mary Ann.
A poor child taken from the street.
No surnames that lasted.
The Church never taught them prayers for this place.
So the dead learned their own.
A ribbon tightens around the bars.
You did not touch it.
You understand the rule too late:
nothing tied here is meant to be taken back.
Because this ground was never given release.
The Bishop counted them while alive.
Taxed the rooms.
Measured the flesh.
Then denied the earth.
The trains start again.
The city exhales.
People pass behind you, laughing, phones glowing,
already forgetting the pause.
But the ribbons keep moving.
They are not asking.
They are reminding.
Later, at home,
you will find red thread on your sleeve.
You will not remember tying it.
And when you try to wash it out,
the stain will spread —
thin, patient, unblessed.
