A lens that hums softly,
like it’s trying to remember a face.
In his hands: a book made of cold metal plates.
Not bound — assembled.
Its spine is etched with sigils that glow
only when you stop looking directly at them.
The title pulses once.
OUR FRIENDS THE MACHINES
Mara wrinkles her nose.
“Chibi… why does that book sound like it’s thinking?”
Chibi doesn’t look up.
“It’s not thinking,” he says quietly.
“It’s… listening.”
The pages don’t turn.
They unlock.
Symbols slide into place.
Blueprints.
Forgotten toys.
Machines that learned too much from watching children grow up.
Mara hears it then —
a soft mechanical rhythm behind the walls,
as if something old is keeping time,
waiting for someone young enough to ask the wrong questions.
“This isn’t horror,” Chibi says.
“It’s what happens before horror.”
He closes the book.
“Before adults notice.”
Before the world decides
whether it was ever a good idea
to let machines watch us dream.
