You notice it only because
the knocking isn’t knocking.
It’s rhythm.
Not loud.
Not violent.
Measured —
as if someone outside already knows
how many breaths your house can hold.
The fire burns low.
The door stays shut.
The winter presses its face to the glass.
Then the singing starts.
Not a carol.
Not a prayer.
A voice made of bone and patience,
asking politely
to be let in.
You don’t answer.
The jaw snaps.
Once.
Twice.
Something scrapes the wood outside —
not claws,
but teeth remembering how to close.
They call it the Mari Lwyd.
The Grey Mare.
A skull pulled from the earth
and dressed in a shroud,
eyes of glass catching the firelight
like something still awake inside the dead.
It doesn’t break doors.
It doesn’t force entry.
It waits.
The verses come again —
clever, mocking, relentless.
Every excuse you offer
is already anticipated.
Every rhyme you fail to answer
loosens the lock.
You feel it then:
This isn’t celebration.
It’s a siege.
If you don’t answer,
the year turns against you.
If you do,
you invite winter itself
to step across the threshold.
The jaw snaps closer now.
Inside your head.
Inside the walls.
The song stops.
Silence means
you’ve lost.
The bolt slides back on its own.
The door opens.
And the dead horse smiles.
