You notice it first by the smell.
Not mulled wine.
Not cinnamon or clove.
Something sharper.
Hot metal and roasted fat.
The Nuremberg market is closing for the night.
The crowd thins.
The music dies.
And the last booth—
the one with the pink neon pig—
keeps glowing long after the power should’ve gone out.
Steam drifts from its chimney.
Not white.
Gold.
Heavy.
It rolls over the cobblestones like breath.
Inside, the mugs are still warm.
The wine still bubbles.
And the vendor—
that cheerful man in the wool cap—
is gone.
Only footprints remain.
Hoofprints.
They glisten in the snow,
burned into the stone like brands.
You follow them because the air behind you feels too cold to stay.
They lead past the Toy Museum,
down to where the drains sigh and the rats don’t move anymore.
The smell deepens.
Boiled sugar.
Blood.
Electricity.
A sound begins—soft at first.
A bell.
But it doesn’t ring.
It vibrates.
A hum, low and wet,
as if the metal is alive.
Then you see it.
The thing they called the Glühschwein.
Not cute.
Not carved.
A shape of heat and wire,
skin stretched too tight around a furnace heart.
It breathes through a snout of iron.
Each exhale melts the frost.
Each inhale steals your warmth.
The legend said it was born from the Yule fire—
a pig that ate light instead of food.
A Thermovore.
A feast that learned to hunger.
And tonight, it walks again,
fat with centuries of forgotten winters.
It turns toward you.
The bell swings once.
The air shivers.
You can smell your own skin beginning to cook.
You think to run—
but something heavy lands on your back.
Heat.
Weight.
The world narrowing to a single glow.
They say the Glühschwein doesn’t eat flesh.
It eats warmth.
It drains you until the snow on your lashes turns to glass,
and you freeze standing upright—
a candle for the next traveler to see.
By morning, the booth will open again.
The mugs refilled.
The neon pig smiling.
And somewhere in the steam,
you’ll swear you hear a voice whisper—
soft, grateful, almost kind:
“You kept me warm.”
This time it’s real.
The Glühschwein walks again.
❓ If a light promised warmth on the coldest night of the year—
would you follow it,
knowing what burns to keep it glowing?
