❓ If the dead invited you to dance… would you follow their step, or hold your breath?

Stacy says old Alpine plague chapels have a kind of silence
that isn’t silence at all.
A weight.
A pause.
A breath held by someone
who shouldn’t be breathing.

Caelwyn walks beside her,
boots sinking into damp leaves,
his red beard dusted with chapel-lint and old incense
that clings like memory.
He pushes the wooden door open—
bones, hourglasses, and grim smiles carved into its surface.

Inside, the air is wrong.

Not cold.
Not warm.
Balanced—
as if the room can’t remember
which century it belongs to.

Stacy raises her lantern.
The walls ignite in gold.
Every surface painted:
plague angels, skeletal revelers,
monks debating with Death,
a Totentanz frozen mid-beat.

And then it moves.

A draft circles their ankles,
soft, deliberate,
as though invisible hands
were asking for company.

Stacy whispers,
“Do you hear that?”

Caelwyn listens.
There is nothing.

“Exactly,” she says.
“That’s what’s wrong.”

The silence shifts—
not breaking,
not cracking—
stepping.
Like feet returning to a dance
they were never released from.

A painted skeleton tilts its head.

Just slightly.
Just enough.

Shadows ripple behind the lantern light—
not from flame,
but from movement
inside the paint itself.

The Totentanz resumes.

Slow.
Certain.
The rhythm of a ritual
that only wakes
when the living wander too close.

A breath rolls through the chapel—
warm, impossible,
carrying incense, rot,
and prayers whispered before Austria had borders.

A skeletal hand lifts on the wall.
A gesture.
An invitation.

Stacy steps back.
The chapel answers
with a step forward.

“Caelwyn…”
Her voice thin.
“We need to leave.”

The painted dancers lean from the walls,
their smiles widening—
welcoming,
expectant,
hungry for one more partner.

❓ If the dead reached for your hand… would you run, or learn the steps they never forgot?
