The grown-ups say the First Advent is about hope…
but the old stories say it’s something older.
They say this was the night
when the sun grew tired of rising,
and the world checked who still carried a spark.
Back then, people didn’t light candles for decoration.
They lit them because the dark felt… curious.
Because the wind walked like a hungry thing.
Because winter liked to see who noticed it first.
Grandma once told me the First Advent was called
the Night of the Long Breath —
when the world inhales so deeply
that everything living has to hold still
just to hear what it wants.
Tonight feels like that.
The snow is quiet.
Too quiet.
Like it remembers something I don’t.
Sean says the old gods walked closer on nights like these.
Stacy says they still do,
you just have to stand still long enough to hear them.
Chibi says he heard one humming behind the woodshed
(but Chibi says a lot of things).
Eljara left a slice of bread on the windowsill “just in case.”
It vanished before she blinked.
So I lit my lantern —
the tiny one that glows like it’s trying its best —
and I whispered the old promise:
“I’ll keep the light if you keep the path.”
Caelwyn said that’s all the ancestors ever asked for.
A promise.
And a little flame.
If you want… you can walk with me.
We’re following the lanterns tonight.
One for each of us.
One for those who walked before.
And one for whatever listens in the trees.
Just stay close.
