The Old Gods Never Left — The Bargain That Kept the Winter Out

THE OLD GODS NEVER LEFT

THE BARGAIN THAT KEPT THE WINTER OUT

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay · From The Old World to 5th Edition · Mythveil Chronicles

Week 3 · Norsca · Sean & Eljara

Sean and Eljara watching Ragna place an iron ring against an ancient standing stone above a snowy Norscan village.

The village had no walls.

It had no graves, either.

And although the winter had already killed livestock in neighbouring valleys, its children were healthy, its stores were full, and its fishing boats still returned from the frozen sea.

SEAN: “That’s either a miracle or a very suspicious arrangement.”

ELJARA: “Probably both.”

The village lawspeaker, Ragna, showed them three standing stones above the settlement.

Every autumn, the villagers left grain, fish, wooden carvings and locks of hair beneath them.

RAGNA: “Our ancestors made a bargain. The One Beneath the Snow keeps the worst winter from our valley. We remember our promise.”

SEAN: “And what exactly did your ancestors promise?”

RAGNA: “The songs disagree.”

The oldest stories called the power a mountain spirit. Later generations spoke of an ancestor. Some now believed it belonged to the great gods worshipped across Norsca.

The names had changed.

The offerings had not.

ELJARA: “So you know the ritual works. But you don’t know who receives it.”

RAGNA: “Does the name matter if our children survive?”

Sean had no easy answer.

That evening, they watched the ceremony.

An old fisherman left a carved boat. A mother offered wool. Two children placed a wooden fish upon the stone.

Then Ragna set down an iron ring.

It sank into solid rock as though the stone were water.

The wind stopped.

Beyond the ridge, snow still lashed the mountains. Inside the circle, not a breath stirred.

SEAN: “Well. Somebody’s listening.”

ELJARA: “That doesn’t tell us who.”

Later, an elderly villager confessed something troubling.

Fifty years ago, the offerings had been left below the ridge. Then a terrible storm came. A woman dreamed that they should carry the gifts higher.

They obeyed.

The storm ended.

Since then, other details had changed. New offerings. New words. New interpretations.

Every change had seemed necessary.

SEAN: “And if next winter it asks for blood?”

OLD FISHERMAN: “It hasn’t.”

SEAN: “That’s not what I asked.”

The man looked towards the mountain.

OLD FISHERMAN: “Then I hope I die before it does.”

When Sean and Eljara left, they saw a storm approaching the village.

At the standing stones, the clouds divided.

The valley remained clear.

SEAN: “Whatever it is, it keeps its side of the bargain.”

ELJARA: “Today.”

The villagers had inherited a promise that genuinely protected them.

But nobody remembered its original terms.

And nobody could say whether the thing answering their prayers was still the thing their ancestors had met.

THE QUESTION

If an ancient power had protected your family for centuries, but nobody remembered what your ancestors originally promised in return, would you continue honouring the bargain — or risk breaking it to discover the truth?

GLI ANTICHI DÈI NON SE NE SONO MAI ANDATI

IL PATTO CHE TENEVA LONTANO L’INVERNO

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay · From The Old World to 5th Edition · Mythveil Chronicles

Settimana 3 · Norsca · Sean ed Eljara

Il villaggio non aveva mura.

E nemmeno tombe.

I nomi erano cambiati.

SEAN: «Be’, qualcuno sta ascoltando.»

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay · From The Old World to 5th Edition · Mythveil Chronicles

Semana 3 · Norsca · Sean y Eljara

Nosotros cumplimos nuestra promesa.»

SEAN: «¿Y qué prometieron exactamente vuestros antepasados?»

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay · From The Old World to 5th Edition · Mythveil Chronicles

Woche 3 · Norsca · Sean & Eljara

SEAN: „Und was genau haben eure Vorfahren versprochen?“

Darauf hatte Sean keine einfache Antwort.
