THE OLD GODS NEVER LEFT
THE LADY AT THE WELL
Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay · From The Old World to 5th Edition · Mythveil Chronicles
Week 3 · Bretonnia · Mara & Chibi

The first thing Chibi noticed was the cake.
The second was that nobody was allowed to eat it.
CHIBI: “That’s a very nice cake.”
MARA: “Don’t touch it.”
CHIBI: “I was only checking.”
MARA: “With your fingers?”
CHIBI: “They’re very good at checking.”
The cake stood beside an ancient well in a Bretonnian village, decorated with honey, flowers and red berries.
Every spring, the villagers gathered there to honour the Lady of the Lake.
They brought milk, tied ribbons around the stones and sang an old song.
Then everyone touched the well three times.
Even the priest.
MARA: “Why do you touch the stones?”
Old Ysabeau smiled.
YSABEAU: “My mother taught me.”
MARA: “And who taught her?”
YSABEAU: “Her mother.”
CHIBI: “That’s a lot of mothers.”
The village priest, Brother Matthieu, explained that the well was sacred to the Lady.
But Ysabeau remembered something different.
When she was young, there had been no statue of the Lady beside the well.
Only an old stone face.
Her grandmother had called it the Mother Below.
MARA: “Was that the Lady too?”
MATTHIEU: “Perhaps an old country name for her.”
YSABEAU: “Perhaps.”
She did not sound convinced.
Later, the villagers sang their ancient song.
Brother Matthieu recognised none of the words.
MARA: “Who are you singing to?”
YSABEAU: “The one beneath the water.”
MATTHIEU: “The Lady does not live inside a well.”
CHIBI: “Maybe she visits.”
Ysabeau laughed.
But the priest looked troubled.
He had blessed the water in the Lady’s name.
The villagers had performed a ritual older than his chapel.
Neither could explain why both belonged together.
Then Ysabeau told them about the year the offerings stopped.
A new lord had forbidden the old customs.
At first, nothing happened.
Then the water tasted of iron.
The cattle refused to drink.
A child began speaking in a stranger’s voice.
And an elderly woman disappeared beside the well.
When the villagers restored the offerings, the water became sweet again.
The child recovered.
The missing woman never returned.
CHIBI: “So the cake didn’t fix everything.”
YSABEAU: “No, little one.”
MARA: “But something changed when you brought it back.”
YSABEAU: “Yes.”
Nobody knew whether the offerings pleased a protector, quietened something dangerous, or simply coincided with the end of the trouble.
Before leaving, Mara looked into the well.
A woman’s face appeared beneath her reflection.
Pale. Ancient. Watching.
Then it vanished.
Mara stepped back.
CHIBI: “Did you see a fish?”
MARA: “No.”
CHIBI: “A frog?”
MARA: “No.”
He looked into the water.
CHIBI: “There’s no cake.”
Mara took his hand.
She did not know whether she had seen the Lady, the Mother Below or something else entirely.
The villagers had changed the name of the one they honoured.
But something was still listening.
CHIBI: “Next year we should bring two cakes.”
MARA: “Why?”
CHIBI: “In case there are two ladies.”
MARA: “And if there’s only one?”
CHIBI: “We can eat the other.”
THE QUESTION
If your village had honoured a sacred well for centuries, but you discovered that its oldest rituals predated the deity everyone now worshipped, would you continue the offerings, replace them with new prayers — or try to discover who had been receiving them all along?

GLI ANTICHI DÈI NON SE NE SONO MAI ANDATI
LA SIGNORA DEL POZZO
Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay · From The Old World to 5th Edition · Mythveil Chronicles
Settimana 3 · Bretonnia · Mara e Chibi
MARA: «Non toccarla.»
CHIBI: «Stavo solo controllando.»
MARA: «Con le dita?»
CHIBI: «Sono bravissime a controllare.»
YSABEAU: «Sua madre.»
CHIBI: «Sono davvero tante mamme.»
MARA: «A chi state cantando?»
CHIBI: «Magari viene a trovarci.»
Ysabeau rise.
All’inizio non accadde nulla.
Poi l’acqua prese a sapere di ferro.
YSABEAU: «No, piccolo.»
Pallido. Antichissimo. Immobile a osservarla.
Poi svanì.
Mara indietreggiò.
CHIBI: «Hai visto un pesce?»
MARA: «No.»
CHIBI: «Una rana?»
MARA: «No.»

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay · From The Old World to 5th Edition · Mythveil Chronicles
Semana 3 · Bretonia · Mara y Chibi
CHIBI: «Solo estaba mirando.»
YSABEAU: «No, pequeño.»
CHIBI: «¿Has visto un pez?»
MARA: «No.»
CHIBI: «¿Una rana?»
MARA: «No.»

DEUTSCH
DIE ALTEN GÖTTER SIND NIE VERSCHWUNDEN
DIE HERRIN AM BRUNNEN
Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay · From The Old World to 5th Edition · Mythveil Chronicles
Woche 3 · Bretonia · Mara & Chibi
MARA: „Nicht anfassen.“
CHIBI: „Ich wollte nur nachsehen.“
MARA: „Mit deinen Fingern?“
YSABEAU: „Vielleicht.“
Überzeugt klang sie nicht.
Später sangen die Dorfbewohner ihr altes Lied.
Bruder Matthieu erkannte kein einziges Wort.
