“Why do people assume that life outside a city must be poorer?” Sean asked.
“Because they confuse industrialisation with prosperity,” Eljara replied.
“Saltport has factories and a harbour. That doesn’t mean everyone beyond it is struggling to survive.”
“Nor does it mean smaller communities are automatically happier or more independent.”
Sean pointed towards Phareflaw Lighthouse. “Captain McAlgae plans to dismantle her riverboat, the Drastic, and turn its hull into a tenderhold.”
“A vessel becoming a home,” Eljara said. “People adapting what they have.”
“I like the idea that civilisation doesn’t always need factories and city walls.”
“One captain’s decision doesn’t explain every tenderhold. But Phareflaw reveals something else: Saltport needs its lighthouse, and the lighthouse needs people to maintain it.”
“So the city needs the people beyond it.”
“And they may have good reasons to remain connected to the city.”
The question isn’t who’s more civilised. It’s how different communities organise their lives.
Beyond Saltport, people simply find other ways of making a home.
