The fire is small.
Mara thinks that is disappointing.
Chibi thinks it is enough.
They sit beneath the stars of an Imperial world, feeding it one piece of wood at a time.
Mara watches the flames.
“What happens if we stop feeding it?”
“It goes out.”
“Or?”
Chibi looks at the dry grass beneath them.
“It starts burning whatever else it can reach.”
Mara pulls her blanket away from the flames.
Then she looks at the pile of wood.
“What if we give it everything?”
Chibi looks towards the dark grasslands.
“Then it isn’t a campfire anymore.”
“What is it?”
“A forest fire.”
Mara thinks about Khorne.
Fight for someone you love.
But if the fire needs another enemy, and another, eventually even the people you wanted to protect can become enemies.
Tzeentch.
Ask questions.
Learn.
But if no answer can ever reach you, eventually even your own mind becomes another mystery to tear apart.
Nurgle.
Heal.
Care.
Keep someone alive.
But if you give and give while refusing to receive care yourself, eventually the healer becomes the last thing left to consume.
Slaanesh.
Create.
Improve.
Become.
But if no praise, love or beauty can ever reach you, eventually you become the imperfection that must be corrected.
Mara looks back at the fire.
“So what’s stronger than Chaos?”
Chibi shrugs.
“Maybe nothing has to be.”
They haven’t defeated the fire.
They feed it.
It warms them.
And when they need warmth, they allow themselves to receive it.
Your fire can fight.
Question.
Heal.
Create.
Become.
It can burn as brightly as it can.
Love does not extinguish it.
Love keeps the fire connected to something beyond itself.
You give.
You receive.
You matter.
They matter.
And neither you nor the people beside you need to become fuel.
Mara looks towards us.
“You’ve got one too, haven’t you?”
Chibi smiles.
“Everyone does.”
So what does your fire give to the world, what does the world give back to it — and are you still allowing both yourself and everyone beside you to feel its warmth?
