Mara and Chibi sat on a hill above the road.

Below them…

an army was marching.

Thousands of people.

Thousands of boots.

Thousands of voices.

But only one banner led them.

Mara:
“Chibi…”

“…why are they all following him?”

Chibi:
“I don’t know.”

Mara:
“Is he their king?”

Chibi:
“Maybe.”

Mara:
“A great knight?”

Chibi:
“Maybe.”

Mara:
“A hero?”

Chibi looked toward the distant rider.

Chibi:
“Maybe they think so.”

Mara frowned.

Mara:
“But they can’t all know him.”

Chibi:
“No.”

Mara:
“Then why follow him?”

Chibi picked up a stick and drew a little circle in the dirt.

Chibi:
“Imagine you’re lost in the forest.”

“It’s dark.”

“You don’t know the way home.”

“Then someone appears and says…”

“I know the way.”

Mara:
“I’d ask how they know.”

Chibi smiled.

Chibi:
“Good.”

He drew another circle.

Then another.

Then dozens.

Chibi:
“But what if everyone is lost?”

“And one person says…”

“Follow me.”

Mara looked down at the marching army.

Mara:
“Then everyone has somewhere to go.”

Chibi:
“Yes.”

Mara:
“And they’re not alone anymore.”

Chibi:
“Yes.”

Below them, one soldier began singing.

Another joined.

Then ten.

A hundred.

Soon…

thousands sang the same song.

Mara smiled.

Mara:
“They’re braver together.”

Chibi:
“They are.”

She watched them.

Mara:
“That’s nice.”

Chibi hesitated.

Chibi:
“It can be.”

Mara immediately looked at him.

Mara:
“You did it again.”

Chibi:
“What?”

Mara:
“You made something nice sound scary.”

Chibi laughed.

Chibi:
“Think about our campfire.”

“One flame can light another.”

“And another.”

“And another.”

Mara looked down at the thousands below.

Her smile slowly disappeared.

Mara:
“One fire…”

Chibi:
“…can ignite thousands.”

Mara:
“But fire keeps us warm.”

Chibi:
“Yes.”

Mara:
“It cooks our food.”

Chibi:
“Yes.”

Mara:
“It keeps monsters away.”

Chibi:
“Sometimes.”

Mara became quiet.

Mara:
“But fire can burn a house.”

Chibi nodded.

Mara:
“A forest.”

Another nod.

She looked toward the endless column of soldiers.

Mara:
“Everything.”

Silence.

Mara:
“Then how do I know…”

“…if I should follow someone’s fire?”

For once…

Chibi didn’t answer immediately.

Then he looked at her.

Chibi:
“Maybe you shouldn’t only ask…”

“Where are they leading me?”

A pause.

Chibi:
“Maybe you should ask…”

“Who will I become…”

“…if I follow them there?”

The army disappeared beyond the hills.

Only the banner remained visible.

Mara:
“That’s a lot of power…”

“…for one person.”

Chibi:
“Yes.”

Mara watched the final banner disappear.

Mara:
“Then I hope…”

“…the person carrying the first flame…”

“…knows where they’re going.”

Chibi said nothing.

Because sometimes…

they don’t.

We are stronger together.
