The governor smiled as he looked across the valley.
GOVERNOR:
“We brought them civilization.”
Sean watched thousands of workers leaving the mine.
SEAN:
“Did you ask what they already had?”
The governor laughed.
GOVERNOR:
“They had nothing.”
Eljara slowly set down her teacup.
ELJARA:
“They had homes.”
A pause.
ELJARA:
“They had traditions.”
Another pause.
ELJARA:
“They had stories.”
The governor shrugged.
GOVERNOR:
“Stories don’t build empires.”
Before Sean could answer—
the factory whistle sounded.
Once.
Then again.
Then every whistle across the valley answered.
One after another.
No one was pulling them.
The governor’s smile disappeared.
GOVERNOR:
“What is that?”
A coal-covered foreman ran toward the veranda.
FOREMAN:
“The miners won’t go back in.”
The governor frowned.
GOVERNOR:
“Why?”
The foreman looked toward the mountain.
FOREMAN:
“They say…”
He hesitated.
FOREMAN:
“…the mountain started breathing.”
Silence.
Sean looked toward the black mine entrance.
SEAN:
“Sometimes…”
“…the oldest stories aren’t warnings about the past.”
He turned toward the governor.
SEAN:
“They’re warnings about the future.”
Far below—
every worker stood perfectly still.
Not looking at the governor.
Not looking at the mine.
Looking beyond it.
As though something inside the mountain…
had finally awakened.
🜍 THE PRICE OF CIVILIZATION
They believed they had conquered the mountain.
They never wondered…
what lived beneath it.
If you remember what this felt like —
you already know what you’re missing.
Step back into it.
Or keep missing it.
