Pulp Cthulhu Noir July — Tomorrow’s America

Stacy: Does it look different to you?

Caelwyn watches children racing brand-new bicycles down spotless suburban streets.

Fresh paint.

Fresh lawns.

Fresh beginnings.

Every billboard promises the same thing.

TOMORROW STARTS TODAY

Caelwyn smiles.

Caelwyn: Maybe this time they’re right.

Stacy quietly places two photographs into his hands.

The first.

A wartime factory.

The second.

The same building.

Fresh paint.

New sign.

New products.

Caelwyn studies them.

Caelwyn: It became something better.

Stacy looks out toward the suburb.

Families unpack moving trucks.

Neighbors wave across white fences.

Children laugh beneath the July sun.

Finally she asks:

Stacy: Did the building change…

A pause.

“…or only its purpose?”

Silence.

A television flickers inside a nearby living room.

A smiling family.

A smiling salesman.

A smiling future.

“Tomorrow begins today.”

Caelwyn watches the commercial.

Caelwyn: They’re selling hope.

Stacy gently closes the folder.

Stacy: No.

She looks toward the distant factory smokestacks rising beyond the perfect neighborhood.

Stacy: They’re selling the feeling that history is over.

The children keep laughing.

The flags keep waving.

The houses keep multiplying.

Everything is new.

Except the foundations.
