The church archive smelled of dust.
And secrets.
Stacy carefully turned another brittle page.
Then froze.
“What?”
Caelwyn asked.
She didn’t answer immediately.
Instead she slid the journal across the table.
A single sentence had been underlined three times.
WHEN THE KING IS CROWNED, PREPARE THE KNIFE.
Silence.
Caelwyn read it again.
Then again.
“No.”
Stacy nodded.
Another page.
Another warning.
THE LONGEST DAY IS THE FINAL DAY.
Another.
IF HE REMAINS, WE ALL FALL.
Outside the church window they could hear music.
Laughter.
The festival.
The entire town celebrating the Summer King.
Caelwyn looked up.
“Why would they kill him?”
Stacy turned one final page.
The drawing covered nearly the entire sheet.
Something impossible.
Too many eyes.
Too many limbs.
Too many mouths.
Underneath someone had written:
YEAR OF THE BROKEN HARVEST
THE KING LIVED
A long silence.
Then one final line.
MAY GOD FORGIVE US
The music outside suddenly sounded very far away.
“The King isn’t the sacrifice.”
Stacy stared at the drawing.
“No.”
For the first time all day, her voice trembled.
“I think he’s the lock.”
