The garden was beautiful.
That was the first thing Mara noticed.
Flowers everywhere.
Butterflies everywhere.
Green life spilling across every wall and pathway.
“It looks perfect.”
Chibi nodded.
“It does.”
The deeper they walked, the stranger it felt.
The flowers never wilted.
The leaves never fell.
Nothing seemed to end.
Nothing seemed to stop.
Mara frowned.
“Something’s wrong.”
Chibi looked toward a rose bush covered in hundreds of blossoms.
So many blossoms that the branches beneath them were beginning to break.
“It got what it wanted.”
The branch snapped.
Petals drifted through the summer air.
For a moment the garden seemed to breathe.
And suddenly Mara understood.
The problem wasn’t death.
The problem was never-ending growth.
Too much life.
Too many flowers.
Too much summer.
She watched the petals settle onto the earth.
“Do things have to end?”
Chibi smiled softly.
“Otherwise nothing else gets a turn.”
The wind moved through the garden.
And for the first time all day—
it felt alive instead of hungry.
