π THE LITTLE RITUAL (World of Darkness)
The chalk circle shouldn’t have been there.
Flowers.
Herbs.
Faded ribbons.
Hidden in an alley nobody used anymore.
Mara crouched beside it.
“What is it?”
Chibi studied the circle.
“I think it’s a ritual.”
Mara laughed.
“No.”
“It’s a game.”
The summer air stood perfectly still.
A ribbon moved softly in the wind.
Neither child spoke for a moment.
“My grandmother used to hang herbs over the door.”
“So did mine.”
“Why?”
Mara opened her mouth.
Then stopped.
Because she didn’t know.
Not really.
“To keep bad luck away.”
Chibi looked back at the circle.
“Did it work?”
The question lingered.
The flowers.
The herbs.
The faded chalk.
Tiny things.
Meaningless things.
At least that’s what adults would say.
Then Mara reached down and carefully placed a fallen flower back inside the circle.
Without thinking.
Without knowing why.
Just because it felt wrong not to.
Chibi smiled.
Sometimes the oldest traditions survive for a very simple reason.
Somewhere deep downβ
people still know when something matters.
Even if they’ve forgotten why.
