Pulp Cthulhu Noir May — Faster Than The Siren

Chibi: Faster.

Mara: We’re already running.

Chalk lines cover the wet courtyard:

  • rail routes
  • checkpoints
  • emergency arrows
  • factory lanes

Children race between them carrying scraps of paper and bottle caps like classified cargo.

Far away, factory sirens hum through the evening fog.

Nobody stops playing.

Chibi stamps another paper with his wooden block.

Thunk.

“APPROVED.”

Another child runs past shouting:

“Sector Three is behind!”
“Hurry!”

The game speeds up immediately.

Mara: Why does everybody care about winning now?

Chibi redraws the chalk lines faster.

Chibi: Because if you fall behind, you lose protection.

Mara: Protection from what?

A pause.

Chibi: The faster side.

The children begin changing rules while running:

  • shortcuts authorized
  • inspections skipped
  • routes rewritten

Nobody argues anymore.

Only speed matters.

A smaller child slows down near the wall trying to catch his breath.

Nobody waits for him.

The game flows around him like machinery bypassing a broken part.

Mara: He can’t keep up.

Chibi: Then he loses.

Another siren rolls across the city.

Long.
Mechanical.
Routine.

The children barely notice it.

Mara watches the chalk maze becoming more chaotic every minute.

Mara: We’re not building anything anymore.

Chibi keeps stamping papers rapidly.

Thunk.
Thunk.
Thunk.

Chibi: We’re trying not to lose.

That answer hangs in the cold evening air.

The routes keep changing.
The children keep running.
The rules keep accelerating.

Nobody understands the game anymore.

But nobody dares slow down enough to ask.

Mara: What happens if everybody keeps speeding up forever?

For the first time, Chibi hesitates.

Factory smoke drifts across the rooftops while train horns echo through the city.

Finally he answers quietly.

Chibi: Eventually the game catches fire.

No monsters.
No invasion.
No visible war.

Just children learning that fear moves faster than reason.

May does not escalate through hatred.

It escalates through competition.

🜍 Nobody wants to fall behind

If you remember what this felt like —
you already know the sound of running without knowing why.

The sirens in the distance.
The changing rules.
The feeling that slowing down meant disappearing.

Step back into it.
Or keep pretending the race was ever about safety.

Want to go deeper?

Then follow the chalk arrows past the checkpoints.
Past the factory lights.
Into the machinery where fear became momentum.

The dossiers are waiting.
The race is still accelerating.
