Mara:
“Yes.”

“So what’s wrong?”

Silence.

“That’s normal.”

Pause.

“I can do it.”

“Yes.”

“It’s just a rule.”

Silence.

“They changed it again.”

“Yes.”

“But everyone knows now.”

“Yes.”

“Yes.”
Pause.
Chibi:
“And then I’m back in.”
Mara:
“Yes.”
Chibi smiles a little.
Chibi:
“See?”
Mara:
“Yes.”
Chibi:
“So it’s okay.”
Mara:
“No.”
Silence.
Chibi:
“Why not?”
Mara:
“Because you still remember the old one.”
Pause.
Chibi:
“So?”
Mara:
“They need you to stop.”
Chibi:
“They didn’t say that.”
Mara:
“No.”
Chibi:
“Then how do you know?”
Mara:
“Because that’s the price.”
Silence.
Chibi:
“For playing?”
Mara:
“For staying.”
Long pause.
Chibi:
“What happens if I don’t?”
Mara:
“You’ll keep hurting.”
Chibi:
“And if I do?”
Mara:
“You’ll stop.”
Chibi:
“That sounds better.”
Mara:
“Yes.”
Pause.
Chibi:
“Then why are you sad?”
Mara:
“Because it works.”
Silence.
Chibi:
“I don’t want to be alone.”
Mara:
“I know.”
Chibi:
“And I’m tired.”
Mara:
“I know.”
Long silence.
Chibi:
“If I come back…”
Mara:
“Yes?”
Chibi:
“…will I still be me?”
Mara:
“Not the same way.”
