(Sean & Eljara — Dialogue)
Sean:
“It was funny for about three seconds.”
Eljara:
“Yes.”
Sean:
“And after that?”
Eljara:
“It stayed.”
Sean:
“That’s the wrong part.”
Eljara:
“Yes.”
Sean:
“A joke should pass.”
Eljara:
“Yes.”
Sean:
“This one didn’t.”
Eljara:
“No.”
Sean:
“The boy changed the rules in the middle of the game.”
Eljara:
“Yes.”
Sean:
“And the others laughed.”
Eljara:
“Yes.”
Sean:
“Then they accepted it.”
Eljara:
“Yes.”
Sean:
“That’s cheap.”
Eljara:
“No.”
Sean:
“No?”
Eljara:
“Cheap still admits value.”
Sean:
“And this didn’t?”
Eljara:
“No.”
Eljara:
“It only needed momentum.”
Sean:
“The merchant had it too.”
Eljara:
“With the weights.”
Sean:
“Yes.”
Eljara:
“Yes.”
Sean:
“He made the lie look casual.”
Eljara:
“Yes.”
Sean:
“And that was enough.”
Eljara:
“It often is.”
Sean:
“That’s rotten.”
Eljara:
“Yes.”
Sean:
“Why does laughter help it?”
Eljara:
“Because people forgive what arrives smiling.”
Sean:
“And by the time they stop smiling?”
Eljara:
“It already belongs.”
Sean:
“So that’s the trick.”
Eljara:
“No.”
Sean:
“No?”
Eljara:
“That’s the door.”
Sean:
“And the trick?”
Eljara:
“That no one remembers closing it.”
(Silence)
Sean:
“Then what still counts as a rule?”
(Pause)
Eljara:
“Only the one someone is willing to defend after everyone else has decided to laugh.”
