Watching the street.

A woman drops her keys.
They hit the ground.
A man behind her picks them up.
Hands them back.
She smiles.
Says thank you.

Mara frowns.
“…that was fast.”
Chibi nods.
“Yeah.”
They keep watching.
A car slows.
Stops.
A person crosses.
The car moves again.
No hesitation.
No mistake.
“…they’re not messing up,” Mara says.
Chibi tilts his head.
“…yeah.”
A pause.
“They’re not trying either.”
Mara looks at him.
“What do you mean?”
He shrugs.
“They just… do it right.”
A group approaches the corner.
They split.
Perfect spacing.
Perfect timing.
No one bumps.
Mara pulls her arms closer.
“…that’s not how people walk.”
Chibi nods slowly.
“No.”
“They always mess up a little.”
She watches their feet.
“They don’t.”
A breeze moves through the street.
Leaves shift.
Same direction.
Same speed.
Then still.
Mara looks up.
“…it’s like a game.”
Chibi smiles slightly.
“Yeah.”
The smile fades.
“…not a fun one.”
Mara looks at him.
“Why?”
He stands.
Steps forward.
Into the sidewalk.
People adjust.
Before he gets close.
They move around him.
Clean.
He stops.
Looks back.
“…it’s already playing.”
Mara doesn’t like that.
She stands.
Walks toward him.
Careful.
Her foot lands—
just a little off.
Something shifts.
A person hesitates.
Half a second.
Then—
everything corrects.
Flow restored.
Mara freezes.
“…did you see that?”
Chibi nods.
“Yeah.”
She swallows.
“I messed it up.”
He shakes his head.
“No.”
A pause.
“You weren’t supposed to.”
Mara looks around.
At the people.
At the movement.
At the pattern she can’t see.
“…who’s playing?”
Chibi looks down.
“I don’t think we are.”
Mara’s voice is smaller now.
“…then what are we?”
A long pause.
People pass them.
Perfect.
Chibi watches their steps.
“They’re pieces.”
Mara looks at him.
“…and us?”
He hesitates.
“…we’re the mistake.”
Silence.
Mara takes a step back.
This time—
perfect.
Too perfect.
The pattern holds.
“…that’s worse.”
Chibi nods.
“Yeah.”
