“That’s off.”
Sean stops in the doorway.
Eljara walks past him.
“…what?”
He watches the room.
Doesn’t answer.
The bar is full.
Not loud.
Not quiet.
Balanced.
Someone laughs.
Too early.
Another voice answers.
Exactly on time.
Eljara turns her head slightly.
“…you hear that?”
“Yeah.”
They step inside.
The bartender pours a drink.
Stops.
Slides it across.
The man takes it—
before it reaches him.
Too clean.
Eljara leans on the counter.
“Whiskey.”
The bartender nods.
Turns.
The bottle is already in his hand.
Sean watches.
“…that’s not skill.”
“No.”
“That’s preloaded.”
The glass lands in front of her.
Perfect.
She nudges it slightly.
The bartender adjusts it back.
Without looking.
Eljara freezes.
“…okay.”
“That’s not okay.”
Sean watches the room.
People move.
Around each other.
No collisions.
No hesitation.
Paths don’t cross.
They fit.
“…they’re not reacting,” Eljara says.
Sean nods.
“They’re following.”
“Following what?”
He doesn’t answer.
Instead, he steps forward—
directly into someone’s path.
The man shifts.
Before impact.
Too early.
Sean stops.
“…you see that?”
“Yeah.”
Eljara scans the room again.
Slower now.
“They don’t notice.”
“No.”
“Not even a little.”
Sean’s voice stays low.
“They don’t need to.”
A pause.
Eljara exhales.
“That’s not a trick.”
Sean shakes his head.
“No.”
A beat.
“That’s infrastructure.”
The bartender wipes the counter.
Same motion.
Same speed.
Again.
Eljara looks at Sean.
“So what is it?”
He watches the room.
The rhythm.
The flow.
“A good trick,” he says quietly,
“doesn’t show you something new.”
A pause.
“It removes the space
where something different could happen.”
Eljara’s jaw tightens.
“…and this?”
Sean doesn’t look at her.
“This is what’s left,” he says,
“when nothing can go wrong.”
The bar continues.
Perfect.
