The orchard is loud today.
Birds singing.
Leaves moving.
Wind everywhere.
Spring has fully arrived.
Mara sits on the stone wall.
But she isn’t swinging her feet.
“That feels wrong,” she says.
Chibi lies in the grass beside her.
But he isn’t looking at the sky.
“Yes,” he says.
Footsteps.
They both look toward the path.
The man walks out of the trees.
Clean clothes.
Straight posture.
Calm face.
Perfect.
Too perfect.
Mara frowns.
“He doesn’t look around.”
“No.”
“He doesn’t slow down.”
“No.”
“He doesn’t wonder.”
“No.”
The man stops in front of them.
He smiles.
Mara leans back slightly.
“That’s not his smile.”
Chibi sits up.
“No.”
The smile stays.
Too long.
Then disappears.
Too fast.
Wrong.
“Hello,” the man says.
The voice is right.
Mara doesn’t answer.
Chibi does.
“Hello.”
The man tilts his head.
“Why are you looking at me like that?”
Mara whispers:
“You’re not him.”
Silence.
The wind stops for a moment.
The man smiles again.
Better this time.
Closer.
“Of course I am,” he says.
Mara shakes her head.
“No.”
The man steps closer.
“Why not?”
Mara thinks.
Not with words.
With feeling.
“You’re too full,” she says.
The man blinks.
That is new.
Chibi nods slowly.
“Yes.”
“People are soft inside,” Mara says.
“You’re not.”
The man stands very still.
“Define soft,” he says.
Mara grabs Chibi’s sleeve.
“See?” she whispers.
“That’s wrong.”
Chibi nods.
“Yes.”
“That’s not how people talk.”
The man studies them.
Then takes another step forward.
“Correct,” he says.
The word lands sharp.
Clean.
Wrong.
“Don’t come closer,” Mara says.
The man stops instantly.
Not naturally.
Like something following instructions.
Silence.
“What am I doing wrong?” he asks.
Chibi answers.
“You’re trying too hard.”
The man tilts his head.
“Trying to what?”
Mara whispers:
“Be him.”
The wind returns.
Soft.
Warm.
Birds begin singing again.
Spring continues.
As if nothing is wrong.
But Mara keeps staring.
“He’s still learning,” she says.
Chibi nods.
“Yes.”
“And that’s the worst part.”
