Chibi:

He draws the line again. The wind keeps softening it.
Mara:
What’s on the other side?
Chibi:
Them.
Mara:
Who’s them?
He hesitates.
Chibi:
Not us.
Snow drifts over the line. He redraws it, harder this time.
Mara:
Is this a game?
Chibi:
Yes.
A pause.
Chibi:
I think.
Mara:
What are the rules?
Chibi:
We protect this side.
Mara:
From what?
He looks down the empty street.
Chibi:
From whoever isn’t us.
Mara studies him carefully.
Mara:
Who told you that?
Chibi:
Nobody.
Another pause.
Chibi:
Everyone.
She steps closer to the line.
Mara:
And if someone is cold on the other side?
Chibi:
Then they should’ve picked this side.
The words sound bigger than he is.
Snow covers the line again. He redraws it.
Mara:
Why do you keep fixing it?
Chibi:
Because it keeps disappearing.
Mara:
Maybe it’s supposed to.
He looks confused.
Chibi:
Then how do we know who we are?
Mara slowly places one bare foot across the line.
Chibi gasps.
Chibi:
You can’t!
Mara:
Why not?
Chibi:
Because that’s not us.
Mara:
I’m still me.
He looks from her foot to her face.
Nothing changes.
Chibi:
But you crossed.
Mara:
Yes.
Chibi:
Then what are we?
She kneels and wipes part of the line away.
Snow fills it instantly.
Mara:
We’re the ones who drew it.
Chibi stares at the fading mark.
Chibi:
What if we forget that?
Mara takes his hand.
Mara:
Then it stops being a game.
Chibi:
And becomes real?
Mara:
Yes.
He looks toward a distant scrap fence where red cloth flutters in the wind.
Chibi:
They didn’t forget.
Mara:
Maybe they did.
Chibi:
What do we do?
Mara squeezes his hand.
Mara:
We remember that we can step over.
Snow covers the last of the line.
For a moment, there is no side at all.
