MASKS & MASQUERADE — Week 1 (Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying Game/Old World RPG) Definition

The room had been chosen because it refused to participate.

High ceiling. Dark wood. Walls that had heard arguments before and survived them. Nothing leaned closer when voices dropped.

Stacy closed the door without locking it. Caelwyn noticed. He approved.

“People always start with costumes,” Stacy said, pulling off her gloves. “Painted faces. Silk. Feathers, if the city’s feeling generous.”

“And they shouldn’t,” Caelwyn replied, watching the street below rehearse its evening noises.

“No,” she agreed. “They should start with permission.”

That earned her a glance.

“In the Empire,” Stacy went on, “a mask isn’t a lie. Lies are meant to last. Masks are built to end.”
She tapped the table once. “Bells. Candles. Curfews. Someone official clearing their throat.”

Caelwyn gave a dry huff. “So the difference between order and chaos is timing.”

“And agreement,” Stacy said. “The notice just prevents arguments.”

Masking, she explained, was scheduled. Limited. Watched. Carnival kept calendars. Chaos didn’t.

“There are rules,” she said. “Where. When. Who. And how long.”

“And if someone ignores the ‘how long’ part?” Caelwyn asked.

“Then it stops being a mask,” Stacy replied calmly. “But that’s not our concern this week.”

Outside, laughter rose, corrected itself, and settled into something respectable.

Masks existed where roles became too tight to wear every day. Master. Apprentice. Soldier. Wife. Priest. You could only hold a shape so long before the joints started grinding.

“The Empire survives on people being readable,” Stacy said. “Rank, faith, obligation — visible at a glance. It keeps violence predictable.”

“And masks interfere,” Caelwyn said.

“They suspend,” she corrected. “Suspension assumes return.”

He leaned back. “And if the return doesn’t happen?”

Stacy closed her notebook. “Then the system doesn’t know where to put you. Institutions don’t like that.”

“Institutions never do,” Caelwyn said.

Carnival, she concluded, wasn’t rebellion. It was maintenance. Like cleaning a blade so it didn’t snap later — usually.

Outside, the bells rang. Not the hour. Just a test.

“So,” Caelwyn said, standing. “Week One.”

“Yes,” Stacy replied. “We establish that masks aren’t symbols.”

“They’re tools.”

“And carnival,” she added, opening the door, “is how the Empire proves it can bend without breaking.”

The sound of the street flowed in. Measured. Permitted.

For now.
