Sean & Eljara — Written Off
The rain has slowed, but it hasn’t stopped.
Eljara stands under a closed storefront. The logo is gone, but its outline still stains the wall.
Eljara:
They closed it.
Sean joins her, shaking water from his jacket.
Sean:
I know.
Eljara:
Three calls. Two forms. One reply.
She hands him a thin data slip. Codes. No names.
Sean:
Reclassified.
Eljara:
Below threshold.
Sean reads once. Then again.
Sean:
They didn’t close it because it was wrong.
Eljara:
No.
Sean:
They closed it because it wasn’t worth the time.
Rain runs along the curb toward a drain.
Eljara:
Victim profile dropped into negative forecast.
Sean:
So the math says stop looking.
Eljara:
The math says we already looked too long.
A pause.
Sean:
Anyone object?
Eljara:
No one the ledger recognizes.
She hates how clean that sounds.
Sean:
That’s how it works.
They don’t erase people.
Eljara:
They depreciate them.
Sean folds the slip carefully.
Sean:
Assets get written down.
Eljara:
And written off.
The street stays quiet.
Eljara:
We could keep digging.
Sean:
Off the books.
Eljara:
Unpaid.
Sean:
Uncounted.
She exhales.
Eljara:
So officially, the system worked.
Sean:
Perfectly.
They walk on.
Behind them, the case remains closed — balanced, justified, complete.
