Mara & Chibi — When Play Runs Out
Chibi stands by the window, watching the rain.
Chibi:
It’s still raining.
Mara:
It does that now.
He presses his forehead to the glass.
Chibi:
It used to stop.
Mara doesn’t answer. She sits on the floor, lining up small toys.
Mara:
Do you want to play?
Chibi shrugs.
Chibi:
We don’t have time.
The words hang there.
Mara:
We do.
Chibi points at the wall clock. The numbers change too fast.
Chibi:
It goes wrong.
Mara walks over and gently covers it with a cloth.
Mara:
There.
Chibi shakes his head.
Chibi:
It still counts.
They sit down together.
Mara:
Which game?
Chibi thinks.
Chibi:
The one where nobody wins.
Mara nods.
Mara:
Okay.
They move the pieces slowly. No rules. Just placing them.
A timer beeps somewhere else in the building.
Chibi freezes.
Chibi:
That’s not for us.
Mara:
I know.
Chibi:
But it still means something.
Mara moves a piece closer to him.
Mara:
We can stop wherever we are.
Chibi looks at the game.
Chibi:
That’s not how games work.
Mara:
It is now.
They don’t finish.
The game stays where it is.
Outside, the city keeps time.
Inside, play becomes too expensive.
