The Game Still Knows the Rules (Delta Green) Mara & Chibi — Week 2

Mara:
It feels like the year forgot to knock.

Chibi:
Nah.
It knocked. People were busy counting.

Mara:
Before, everyone agreed where the game ended.

Chibi:
Yeah.
Start here. Finish there.
Fake rules. Useful ones.

Mara:
They weren’t fake.

Chibi:
No.
They just didn’t last forever.

(The die rolls. Lands wrong.)

Mara:
That doesn’t count.

Chibi:
It does now.

Mara:
Do grown-ups notice when rules stop working?

Chibi:
Sure.
They just rename it.

Mara:
Stress.

Chibi:
Or conspiracy.
Same thing. One wears better shoes.

Mara:
Sean says patterns aren’t evil.

Chibi:
He’s right.
Patterns are lazy.

Mara:
But they still trap you.

Chibi:
Only if you pretend you’re not playing.

Mara:
What if the game never ends?

Chibi:
Then winning stops mattering.

Mara:
So why keep playing?

Chibi:
So you remember the rules.
And who breaks them.

(The light flickers. Once.)

Mara:
That wasn’t the game.

Chibi:
No.
That was the house thinking.

Mara:
I don’t think the year is broken.

Chibi:
Me neither.

Mara:
I think it’s watching.

Chibi:
Good.
Then it knows we noticed.

(The die lands perfectly.)

Mara:
That’s worse.

Chibi:
Yeah.

(They don’t touch it.)
