(Miami, 2089. Late evening. A seminar room that smells like old paper, cheap coffee, and rain drying on coats. Neon trembles behind the window like a tired pulse.)
Stacy:
Okay. Week one. No deep dive. Just definitions.
What do we mean when we say “time”?
Caelwyn:
We mean three different things and pretend it’s one.
Stacy:
Good. Name them.
Caelwyn:
First: time as physics.
Second: time as biology.
Third: time as a social weapon.
Stacy:
Thesis one, then.
Caelwyn:
Thesis 1: Time doesn’t “flow.”
Flow is a story the brain tells so the body can move.
Stacy:
Pro: Physics keeps humiliating our instincts.
Relativity breaks the idea of a universal “now.”
Depending on speed and gravity, your now isn’t mine.
Caelwyn:
Contra: Humans can’t live inside that truth.
Your nervous system needs a present moment, or you freeze.
So even if physics is right, our experience still wins at street level.
Stacy:
So the first conflict is: what is true versus what is livable.
Caelwyn:
Exactly. And Blade Runner is basically that conflict with better lighting.
(Stacy smirks; it fades quickly.)
Stacy:
Thesis two.
Caelwyn:
Thesis 2: Clocks don’t measure time.
Clocks manufacture the kind of time societies can control.
Stacy:
Pro: Historically obvious.
Factories didn’t just need labor — they needed synchronized labor.
Time became infrastructure. Shifts. Punch-cards. Deadlines. “On time.”
Caelwyn:
Contra: Lived time refuses to obey.
Waiting feels longer than it is.
Fear stretches seconds.
Trauma can freeze years in one afternoon.
Stacy:
So there’s “clock time” and there’s “human time.”
And they are not the same currency.
Caelwyn:
Right. And the city spends both.
(Rain taps the window like quiet punctuation.)
Stacy:
Thesis three.
Caelwyn:
Thesis 3: Modern time has collapsed into an endless present.
Not because nothing changes — but because everything changes too fast to become meaning.
Stacy:
Pro: Look at how systems track us.
Not in days, but in reaction times.
In attention. In micro-behavior.
The present is mined like a resource.
Caelwyn:
Contra: Humans still build cycles anyway.
Weekends. Seasons. Rituals.
And the biggest one: the New Year.
Stacy:
Which brings us to the dangerous lie: the reset.
Caelwyn:
Yes.
Stacy:
Thesis 4: The New Year is a ritual of controlled forgetting.
A socially accepted “fresh start” that doesn’t change material reality.
Caelwyn:
Pro: It works emotionally.
People need symbolic borders or they drown in continuity.
Rituals let the brain close a chapter even when life won’t.
Stacy:
Contra: The world doesn’t reset.
Debt doesn’t. Grief doesn’t.
Heat doesn’t. Water doesn’t.
In Miami, even the air remembers.
Caelwyn:
So the New Year is a cosmetic patch over a cracked system.
Stacy:
And the worse the crack, the more desperate the patch.
(A long pause. Neon flickers, then steadies. Like it’s pretending.)
Stacy:
Let’s phrase it cleanly.
What’s our Week One definition?
Caelwyn:
Time is not a line.
Time is not a circle.
Time is not even one thing.
Stacy:
Time is a tension field.
Caelwyn:
Between measured time and lived time.
Stacy:
Between physics and the nervous system.
Caelwyn:
Between mythic renewal and bureaucratic continuity.
Stacy:
Between what systems record… and what people carry.
Caelwyn:
And the closer you get to the edge—
the more you notice the part nobody likes saying out loud.
Stacy:
Say it.
Caelwyn:
Time is what forces meaning.
Because without meaning, it’s just loss with a calendar attached.
(Stacy closes her notes. Not satisfied. But ready.)
Stacy:
Good. That’s Week One.
No conclusions. Just the table set.
Caelwyn:
And the knives placed where everyone can see them.
TIME AT THE EDGE — Week 1
A definition, not a conclusion.
A conversation about time at the turn of the year —
how systems measure it,
how people endure it,
and why nothing really resets.
