I won’t tell you a story to scare you.
I’ll tell you one to remember.
In Bavaria, where I come from,
the third Rauhnacht wasn’t loud.
No masks.
No bells.
No running.
It was the night you didn’t stand in doorways.
Not inside.
Not outside.
Never between.
My grandfather called it the thin place.
Not because spirits arrived —
but because things were already passing through.
Doors were either closed.
Or fully open.
Halfways were dangerous.
He said:
“If you stand between, you tell the world you haven’t decided where you belong.”
People laughed at that later.
Called it symbolism.
Metaphor.
But the rule stayed.
That night, we chose a side of the threshold.
Sat down.
Finished what we started.
Spoke only what we meant.
No new promises.
No old grudges.
Because the third Rauhnacht doesn’t take things from you.
It rearranges them.
And whatever you leave unfinished
has a habit of finishing itself.
That’s why we tidy quietly.
Why we lock doors with intention.
Why we don’t linger in maybes.
Not out of fear.
Out of respect.
If tonight you feel unsettled —
caught between years, between thoughts, between choices —
don’t rush.
Just step fully into where you are.
That’s enough.
Tomorrow, the road continues.
