The hospice lay behind them,
yet the Ifrit’s wounded fire still clung to their skin—
a smoke that whispered their names
backwards.
So they went south.
Out of the dead forest.
Across the silent salt flats.
Into the broken mountains above Benidorm—
where the land forgets its name
and the sky watches
without blinking.
And there,
the world shifted.
Sand moved where no dunes had ever lived.
Stone murmured inside their thoughts.
Not warning.
Not welcome.
Recognition.
Ahead, half-swallowed by red dust and moonlight:
a carved stone gate.
Two spirits kept vigil—
thin as smoke,
shaped from stormlight,
utterly still.
They did not speak.
They judged.
The party stepped forward—
not in fear,
and not in pride.
The gate opened,
not with sound,
but with breath.
Beyond it waited
a hall of mirrors.
Not glass,
but liquid silver.
Not reflections,
but possibilities.
From the greatest mirror stepped a queen—
an Elven sovereign crowned in star-glass,
eyes like shattered constellations.
She named them
before they could name themselves.
Then she led them deeper.
In a chamber carved entirely from shadow
stood the mad Malkavian—
mystic, scholar,
heretic of the elements.
Symbols spun through the air around him—
cutting like wind,
whispering like fire.
And behind him,
a hooded figure waited:
still,
cold,
older than death itself,
wearing patience like armor.
The Malkavian smiled.
“I know how to kill your Ifrit,” he said.
“But names have prices.”
Three trials.
Three wounds carved into the soul.
“Survive them,” he whispered,
“and the flame will speak.
Fail—
and it will feast instead.”
