❓ If something has been seen for centuries… what if the question was never whether it exists — but who is allowed to notice it?
The loch is still.
Not calm.
Not peaceful.
Held.
Mist drifts low over the water, refusing to lift far enough to be useful.
Stacy scans the surface first.
Temperature gradients.
Currents.
Reflections that don’t quite agree with the sky.
“No anomaly,” she says.
Then pauses.
“…nothing measurable.”
Caelwyn doesn’t answer.
He watches the water instead of the instruments.
The way it absorbs the horizon without giving anything back.
“People come here to prove something,” he says.
“To others. To themselves.”
Stacy lowers the scanner.
“Every witness describes something different,” she notes.
“Size. Shape. Distance. Certainty.”
“Because they’re not describing the same thing,” Caelwyn replies.
“They’re describing themselves.”
They wait.
Not searching.
Not calling.
Not hoping.
And for a moment — just long enough to doubt it afterward —
the water shifts.
Not a shape.
Not a silhouette.
A permission.
Stacy exhales slowly.
“What if Nessie isn’t hidden,” she says.
“What if it’s selective?”
Caelwyn nods.
“What if you only see it,” he answers,
“when you believe you’re allowed to?”
The loch closes again.
Smooth.
Unremarkable.
As if nothing was ever there.
