They sit near the outer wall, away from the guided paths.
The castle looms behind them, patient as ever.
Sean unwraps the cloth slowly, deliberately, as if speed would offend something old.

The cheese breaks, not cuts.
White, crumbly, honest.

“Elaborate food lies,” Sean says, handing Eljara a piece.
“This one doesn’t.”

Eljara tastes it.
Sharp. Clean. A little sour — the way work tastes when it’s done properly.

“Made for miners,” she says.
“For people who needed strength more than comfort.”

Sean nods.
“Food that lasts. Food that travels. Food you share.”

The wind carries stone dust and cold water from the moat.
The castle watches. It always does.

“This isn’t peasant food,” Eljara adds quietly.
“It’s survival refined.”

Sean eats in silence for a moment, then smiles — small, genuine.
“You don’t build walls like these on empty stomachs.”

They pack the rest away.
Nothing wasted. Nothing romanticized.

Behind them, Caerphilly Castle stands unmoving —
fed by centuries of labor,
and still hungry for witnesses.
