❓ If an idea could wake the dead… would you still call it fiction?
They arrive in the late afternoon,
when Lake Geneva looks calm enough to lie.
Villa Diodati rests above the water,
white walls holding centuries like breath behind teeth.
Tourists take photos.
The house does not respond.
Stacy checks the weather logs first.
“1816,” she murmurs.
“No summer. Ash in the sky. Crop failure.
Tambora’s eruption still circling the planet.”
Caelwyn listens instead.
Not to the lake.
To the silence between waves.
“This is where it happened,” he says.
“Not the monster.
The permission.”
Inside, the air is colder than outside.
Not draft-cold.
Memory-cold.
Stacy moves slowly, respectful.
“No lab. No lightning rods.
Just a table. Ink. People bored enough to ask the wrong questions.”
She stops near the window.
“They didn’t summon a creature,” she adds.
“They asked whether life could be assembled.
And the universe answered… eventually.”
Caelwyn rests his hand against the wall.
The stone hums faintly.
Not energy.
Consensus.
“Frankenstein wasn’t born here,” he says.
“But responsibility was.”
Outside, thunder rolls over the lake—
distant, out of season,
as if the weather remembers the assignment.
Stacy lowers her scanner.
“No anomaly,” she says.
She hesitates.
“Just… a pattern.”
They leave before dusk.
Behind them, the villa remains still—
waiting for the next generation
to confuse knowledge
with innocence.
❓ If an idea written in a storm still echoes two centuries later…
who carries the blame—you, or the thought itself?
