the cliffs towering like a cathedral carved by regret.
St. Beatus Caves glow faintly—
not from lamps,
but from something deeper in the stone.
The legend says a dragon lived here once.
The locals say
it never truly left.
Stacy switches her scanner to geological mode.
The device trembles.
Not vibrating—
trembling.
Like it’s afraid of the dark.
“Pressure shift,” she whispers.
“Too regular. Too… alive.”
Caelwyn steps closer to the cave mouth.
A warm draft brushes his face.
Warm.
From inside a mountain of ice.
He tightens his grip on the lantern.
The first chamber opens around them,
wet stone glistening like the inside of a living throat.
Water drips,
but the droplets fall in a pattern—
three, pause, one, pause, two—
like a language learning itself.
Stacy freezes.
“Do you hear that?”
A breath.
Long.
Heavy.
Shifting the dust.
Something in the dark
adjusts its weight.
Caelwyn lifts the lantern.
The light bends.
Not flickers—
bends,
as if pulled toward something exhaling deeper in the tunnels.
A mark appears on the wall.
Fresh.
Wet.
Claw-shaped.
But the tracks lead upward,
into cracks no creature should reach.
The mountain exhales again.
This time,
the breath carries a sound.
Not a word.
Not quite.
A syllable.
Almost a name.
Stacy steps back.
“Caelwyn… it knows we’re here.”
He doesn’t answer.
He’s staring at the carvings—
symbols older than scripture,
older than stone,
pulsing faintly
like veins beneath the surface.
From the darkness,
something shifts forward.
Slow.
Patient.
Listening.
