Mara finds Chibi sitting in the hallway,
wrapped in a blanket
like a terrified cinnamon roll.
He’s holding a comic book so tightly
the cover is starting to bend.
“Chibi… what happened?”
He points at the page with shaky fingers.
“It’s Winter’s Teeth #9, Mara.
This issue is WRONG.”
She sits beside him.
The snow outside taps against the window
like a creature testing the glass.
Chibi whispers:
“There are vampire hunters in a skyscraper.
A whole Camarilla court trapped at the top.
Minutes until sunrise.
Everyone is going to crispy-fry unless they fight their way down.”
Mara tilts her head.
“That doesn’t sound too scary.”
Chibi flips the page.
A smear of ink moves.
Not printed.
Not static.
Moves.
“Mara… they’re looking at me.”
The comic folds with a soft cracking sound,
like paper remembering it was once a forest.
A shadow on the page shifts.
A pair of eyes turn upward —
not toward the characters,
but toward Chibi.
Mara grabs his arm.
“Chibi.
Stop reading that.”
But he can’t.
“The issue says Cecily is trapped.
The dawn is rising.
And a rat king is making alliances
because nobody survives alone in this kind of night.”
The candles flicker.
A draft crawls beneath the door.
A low whisper escapes the comic —
a voice not meant for human rooms:
“KEEP READING.”
The lights dim.
Mara snaps the book shut.
Chibi hugs it close.
“Mara…
we need to finish it.
If we stop now…
the night inside might not stay inside.”
