HOW CLOSE IS A STRANGER?

Mara and Chibi observe how strangers are accepted into a crowded Munich celebration.

CHIBI: “He wasn’t with them before.”

MARA: “No.”

The beer hall is loud enough that nobody notices two children counting strangers. A man has joined the end of a table. Nobody knows him. Then somebody shifts along the bench. Somebody else raises a glass. A photograph is taken. Five minutes later he is inside the picture.

CHIBI: “So when did he stop being a stranger?”

MARA: “Maybe he didn’t.”

Nothing bad has happened. That matters. People celebrate by doing things they would not do on an ordinary Tuesday: sharing tables, talking to strangers, singing with people whose names they never learned, letting someone stand closer because everyone is laughing at the same joke.

CHIBI: “That’s the good bit.”

MARA: “Yes.”

And that is precisely why the question is uncomfortable. In the world of Delta Green, the Unnatural is real. It does not always need to smash a door down. If it can understand how people decide that somebody belongs, perhaps it only needs to approach at the moment when the rules become softer.

CHIBI: “So parties are dangerous?”

MARA: “No. People are supposed to do this.”

She watches another stranger being pulled into a group photograph.

MARA: “That’s what makes it useful.”

The horror is not that joy is a mistake. The horror is that something inhuman might learn what human welcome looks like.

AND WHAT DO YOU THINK?

How close can a stranger come during a celebration before you stop thinking of them as a stranger—and would you notice the exact moment that changed?
