THE NIGHT THAT MADE A GOD Warhammer 40,000 · Month IX · Bacchanalia · Week IV

STACY:

“They look happy.”

Below them, an Aeldari city celebrates.

Music moves between impossible towers.

Artists shape matter with their minds.

Dancers leap above kilometres of open air.

Strangers drink together.

Lovers disappear through doorways.

A singer performs something so beautiful that half the plaza falls silent.

Stacy applauds.

So does Caelwyn.

STACY:

“Should we?”

CAELWYN:

“Should we what?”

“Like it.”

“Why wouldn’t we?”

Stacy looks across the celebration.

STACY:

“Because we know where this ends.”

CAELWYN:

“That doesn’t make her song less beautiful.”

They walk deeper into the city.

The celebrations change.

A dangerous dance draws louder applause.

A new artist attempts something more intense.

Sensation becomes art.

Fear becomes theatre.

Pain becomes colour.

Pleasure becomes sound.

STACY:

“There.”

“What?”

“The line.”

CAELWYN:

“No.”

Stacy turns.

“No?”

“Danger isn’t Slaanesh.”

Another district.

Another celebration.

Another boundary.

Some enter.

Others refuse.

Nobody forces them.

STACY:

“So still not Slaanesh?”

CAELWYN:

“Not yet.”

And slowly Stacy notices the pattern.

Something extraordinary happens.

It works.

People are moved.

So someone tries to go further.

Not because the last experience failed.

Because it succeeded.

STACY:

“They’re not bored.”

CAELWYN:

“No.”

“Then why isn’t it enough?”

“Because enough is not what they’re looking for.”

Eventually they reach a performance where someone screams.

Not theatrically.

A blade has entered the celebration.

Someone is suffering.

The performer hesitates.

For one moment, the boundary is visible.

Then the crowd calls for more.

The performer looks at them.

At the blade.

At the person before them.

And crosses it.

The crowd erupts.

Later, Stacy watches Aeldari leaving the city.

Others mock them.

Cowards.

Puritans.

Fools afraid of pleasure.

STACY:

“They knew.”

CAELWYN:

“Some did.”

“Then why didn’t everyone leave?”

Caelwyn looks at the city.

Its music.

Its art.

Its lovers.

Its families.

Its history.

CAELWYN:

“Leave what?”

Stacy understands.

Home.

And still the celebrations continue.

One boundary becomes ordinary.

Another replaces it.

Then another.

Millions upon millions of Aeldari experience, desire, create, suffer and reach together.

And their emotions do not end with them.

They touch the Warp.

Something accumulates there.

Nobody gathers to create a god.

Nobody votes for one.

There is no final ceremony in which a civilisation chooses its destruction.

There are simply countless choices.

Private choices.

Shared choices.

Choices applauded by others.

Choices becoming customs.

Customs becoming expectations.

Until the city seems to inhale.

The music breaks.

The Warp screams.

And something opens its eyes.

Slaanesh is born.

Then the city is gone.

Silence.

STACY:

“They made a god.”

CAELWYN:

“Yes.”

“Did they mean to?”

“No.”

“Some of them were just dancing.”

“Yes.”

“Some were making art.”

“Yes.”

“Some were making love.”

“Yes.”

“And they died too.”

“Yes.”

Stacy looks into the emptiness.

STACY:

“So where was the line?”

Caelwyn is silent.

“The murder?”

“One line.”

“The pleasure cults?”

“Another.”

“The first person who wanted something more intense?”

“Another.”

STACY:

“But none of them is the line.”

CAELWYN:

“Perhaps that’s the mistake.”

Stacy remembers the feasts they have already seen.

Soldiers singing.

Space Wolves laughing.

Orks roaring.

Aeldari dancing.

People becoming part of something larger than themselves.

STACY:

“So ecstasy isn’t the problem.”

“No.”

“Celebration isn’t.”

“No.”

“Pleasure isn’t.”

“No.”

“Then what?”

Caelwyn looks towards the civilisation that is no longer there.

CAELWYN:

“The moment when what we feel together becomes powerful enough to make the boundary seem smaller than the experience waiting beyond it.”

STACY:

“And then?”

“Then we discover whether we still believe in the boundary when everyone around us is crossing it.”

Stacy looks into the darkness.

STACY:

“They didn’t have to stop knowing where the lines were.”

Pause.

“They only had to feel something powerful enough to cross them.”

When everyone around you is crossing a boundary together, and what waits beyond it feels more beautiful, more intense and more alive than anything before it — what would still make you stop?
