🜂 The Reason We Rise (Pulp Cthulhu)

Eljara

I don’t want to be brave tonight.

Sean

Then don’t.

Eljara

What?

Sean

Be frightened.

Be angry.

Cry if you need to.

Eljara

That’s your advice?

Sean

You asked about courage.

Not pretending.

(Rain beats softly against the roof of the abandoned railway hut.)

Eljara

I’m tired, Sean.

Sean

I know.

Eljara

I don’t want another mystery.

Another ruin.

Another thing waiting in the dark.

Sean

Neither do I.

Eljara

Then why do you keep going?

(Sean looks at the battered kettle warming over a tiny flame.)

Sean

Because stopping doesn’t give me back anything I’ve lost.

(Silence.)

Eljara

People talk about resilience as though it’s beautiful.

Sean

People usually tell those stories afterward.

Eljara

Exactly.

When the survivor is clean.

Warm.

Safe.

Everyone applauds.

Sean

Nobody wants to remember the middle.

Eljara

The middle?

Sean

The part where the hero is sitting on the floor…

bleeding…

frightened…

crying…

and has absolutely no idea whether he can stand again.

(Eljara watches the little flame.)

Eljara

Perhaps that’s because heroes aren’t supposed to cry.

Sean

Then we’ve been telling terrible stories about heroes.

Eljara

You think crying can be brave?

Sean

No.

Eljara

No?

Sean

Crying is crying.

Fear is fear.

Pain is pain.

(He looks at her.)

Sean

Courage is what you decide to do while they’re still there.

(A long silence.)

Eljara

So you become harder.

Sean

God, I hope not.

Eljara

Why?

Sean

I’ve known hard men.

Eljara

And?

Sean

They shattered beautifully.

(Despite herself, Eljara smiles.)

Eljara

Then what are we supposed to become?

Sean

Stubborn.

Eljara

Stubborn?

Sean

Extremely.

Eljara

That’s your great philosophy?

Sean

It’s served me remarkably well.

Eljara

Not strength?

Sean

Useful.

Eljara

Hope?

Sean

Wonderful when available.

Eljara

Faith?

Sean

Sometimes.

Eljara

But stubbornness?

Sean

Reliable.

(He pours the hot water into two battered metal cups.)

Eljara

Why are we wasting fuel on this?

Sean

Because we’re cold.

Eljara

We have almost nothing left.

Sean

Exactly.

Eljara

That makes no sense.

Sean

The mountain already took our railway.

Our radio.

Most of our food.

Half our equipment.

(He hands her the cup.)

Sean

I’m not giving it the kettle too.

(Eljara laughs.)

Eljara

That’s ridiculous.

Sean

Most resistance is.

(Something buzzes against the window.)

A rain-soaked bumblebee rests on the sill.

Its wings move.

It tries to fly.

Drops.

Eljara

Poor thing.

The bumblebee tries again.

Falls again.

Eljara

Why doesn’t it stop?

Sean

Probably because there’s a flower somewhere.

Eljara

And if there isn’t?

Sean

Then it’ll look for another.

The wings beat again.

The little creature rises.

This time it clears the window…

and disappears into the rain.

Eljara

It didn’t know whether it would make it.

Sean

No.

Eljara

It flew anyway.

Sean

Yes.

(A long silence.)

Eljara

Is that Inner Fire?

Sean

Maybe.

Eljara

Not being afraid?

Sean

No.

Eljara

Not breaking?

Sean

No.

Eljara

Then what?

(Sean looks toward the storm.)

Sean

Something inside the frightened animal…

the wounded adult…

the crying child…

that still believes…

there might be a flower beyond the storm.

Eljara

Belief?

Sean

Belief doesn’t mean knowing you’ll succeed.

Eljara

Then what does it mean?

Sean

Having something worth trying for.

(Eljara slowly stands.)

Eljara

And if we fall?

Sean

We get up.

Eljara

And if we fall again?

Sean

We get up again.

Eljara

How many times?

(Sean puts on his battered hat.)

Sean

Until we find the flower.

Game: Pulp Cthulhu
Campaign: Mythveil Chronicles
Theme: August · Inner Fire · The Reason We Rise

Heroes are often remembered standing tall.

We forget the moments before that.

The shaking hands.

The tears.

The fear.

The quiet admission:

“I don’t know if I can do this again.”

Inner Fire doesn’t make us invulnerable.

It doesn’t stop the world from hurting us.

Sometimes it is nothing more than the stubborn belief that somewhere beyond the storm there remains something worth reaching.

A person.

A promise.

A home.

A ridiculous dream.

A flower.

And when your own fire burns too low, perhaps someone beside you can keep it alive until you are ready to carry it again.

You don’t have to know that you can make it.

Sometimes you only need something worth trying for.
